Assassin’s Creed Rogue, released last fall on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, was initially considered by the publisher as a kind of consolation prize for those who had not yet acquired the new generation consoles – around the same days, owners of Xbox One and PS4 were solemnly presented with a much more expensive Assassin’s Creed: Unity. The latter really looked prettier and more impressive and also offered several significant updates to the gameplay. However, the price to pay for this was numerous technical flaws and a sluggish storyline. But in Rogue, as the recently released PC version showed, this is all right, and therefore the game is perceived in many ways even more interesting than Unity.
Black flag for the Outcast
According to its concept Rogue repeats almost word for word Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. These are so assassin "Corsairs" – our hero plows the seas on his own ship, attacks other ships, boards them, storms forts and even assembles his own fleet. But at any moment he can moor to the shore to do more usual things: jump on roofs and trees, hide in the grass, jump from towers into haystacks, covertly deal with enemies, capture outposts, hunt various animals to make useful equipment from their skins, and collect a bunch of other bonuses.
There, on the shore, you visit taverns and shops to recruit a crew, buy various “upgrades” for the ship or purchase new weapons (blades and pistols) for the main character. On the spot and the ability to capture settlements and improve them, thus increasing your income. Well, during the breaks we complete story missions and hunt for all sorts of big shots.
Of course, along with all this in Rogue Many of the rather annoying “features” of the series have also moved Assassin’s Creed. There are boring additional tasks aimed at collecting anything and everything, and specific, let’s say, control, in which the hero, against your will, strives to climb somewhere, jump up or jump, and a combat system that allows you to deal with crowds of enemies practically without a yawn. But in Rogue there is something that we lacked so much in Unity, – an unusual hero and an intriguing plot. Finally, such a sharp feint with the ears allowed us to realize something that we have never seen in this series: Shay Cormac himself becomes a victim, hunted by other assassins. While performing the next task, a killer sent by his former comrades may well jump from the roof or jump out of the bushes and remove almost the entire health bar with one blow. Assassins use the same methods of camouflage and attack as the player, and therefore pose a special danger. To detect them, you have to not only actively use “eagle vision”, but also lure them out of ambushes in every possible way – scattering money, for example, or setting off noise firecrackers.
Cold wind of change
Available in Rogue and other innovations. The northern part of North America and the frozen Atlantic coast are now available for exploration and sea travel. Accordingly, we have to sail among icebergs and periodically use the ship as an icebreaker. Once in the cold waters, the hero begins to gradually lose health.
Enemy ships can now board you themselves. But we were allowed to quietly launch harpoons at the enemy’s stern, fire at vulnerable spots of the ship with a Pakla gun, a prototype of a high-speed machine gun, and even spill flammable oil in front of our pursuers.
On land, Cormac was handed an air rifle. It shoots not only sleep darts, but also special charges that infuriate the target and force them to attack everyone around them – very convenient when you need to distract opponents and sneak somewhere unnoticed. All these are not God knows what important changes, but still they refresh the usual gameplay quite well.
The game will inform you that assassins have begun hunting you with a strange otherworldly whisper heard from all sides.
Certainly, Assassin’s Creed Rogue Much like an extended add-on for Black Flag, Moreover, it was made for the previous generation of consoles. But you shouldn’t dismiss this game as something secondary. The PC version looks much better than on consoles, works stably, without crashes or glitches, and all this allows you to fully enjoy a story unusual for the series, where you yourself hunt assassins and at the same time are their target.
